Michael Don Hitt lost his long battle with cancer January 8, 2020, in Salem, WI.

He was born January 14, 1957, in Los Angeles, CA to Robert W. and Patricia J. (Etter) Hitt. He grew up in San Jose, CA, and Wildwood, IL, attending Warren Township High School in Gurnee, IL.

Don married Mary Morello July 1986, in Kenosha, WI. They moved to Hurley, WI, in 1987, where they raised their family, of which Don was extremely proud of.

In his early years, Don worked as a sales representative and factory worker. After moving to Hurley, he worked for different radio stations and a local furniture store in Ironwood, MI. In 2001, he realized his dream and he and Mary opened their own furniture store in Ironwood; with a second store in Ashland, WI, in 2008.

His hobbies included music and he played drums and sang in several local bands. Don was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and was ecstatic when they won the World Series. He loved baseball and played softball on his church’s team. He had been a Star Trek aficionado since childhood. He also enjoyed woodworking, golf, and riding his Harley.

Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood, MI.

He is survived by his children, Maija (Umar Williams) Hitt of St. Paul, MN, Michelle (Brandon Miller) Hitt of Stevens Point, WI, and Michael (Andrea Gonzales) Hitt of Montreal, WI; his sisters, Sally Kupres of Salem, WI, Catherine (Greg) Lessard of Camdenton, MO, and Danielle Gorman of Camdenton, MO; and a brother Thomas (Linda) Hitt of Fayetteville, AR. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and best friends from childhood, Brenda Sorenson, Mark Meyers, Al kick, and his dog, Rex.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Robert and Patricia Hitt; stepmother, Norma Hitt; uncle, Jack Etter; niece, Melissa DuBois; brother-in-law, George Kupres; and a father-in-law, Hank Morello.

He spent his last four years with his sister Sally, who was also his best friend and caregiver.

A special thank you to St. Catherine’s incredible Cancer Center and their amazing staff, and Hospice Alliance and their wonderful staff.

Private services will be held by Michael’s Family.

I will never forget how Don (and his friends) pitched in to help after Norma's passing. He worked tirelessly, was of good cheer, and and was there to do whatever was asked. I'm so glad we got to know him during that time. Our sympathies to the entire HItt family. He will be missed.

I have always been a sucker for percussion!!! Man he could pay those drums. That was one of the last things we talked about was he didn't have the energy to play anymore. We joked about the band members he could recruit in heaven to play with. He urged me to see my doctor regularly, that was something he regretted. Love you my friend. Bang those drums!!!
