Obituary for Lois M. Murphy (Chambers)

Lois Margaret (nee Chambers) Murphy, born January 4, 1930, passed on December 21, 2022. She was a few weeks shy of her 93rd birthday. Lois had a full and blessed life. She was born in Detroit, MI. Her parents, Roy and Lillian (nee Jagielski) Chambers, and her brother and sister, Roy R. Chambers Jr. and Mary Lou Chambers preceded her in death.

She began working at the Royal Oak Public Library when she was 14 and graduated from Little Flower High School in 1946. She graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Special Education. She taught briefly before marrying David James Murphy in 1951 and starting their family. They had six children, Meg (Frederick) Fedorowicz, Elizabeth Murphy, Janis (Michael) Siegel, Mary Lou (Gerald) Feick, James Murphy, and John Murphy. They now have 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Lois and David moved from Michigan to Libertyville, IL in 1970. Lois completed a master’s degree in library science from Rosary College and began working at the Waukegan Public Library. She ran their Bookmobile Program, which serviced rural neighborhoods and the county jail.

They then retired to Door County, WI to enjoy sailing on Lake Michigan, reading, playing bridge, and volunteering at the Miller Art Center. All throughout her life Lois enjoyed her children and grandchildren, but also made time for community service. She was a girl scout leader and volunteered in the schools as the “Picture Lady”, to name but a few.

Lois will be deeply missed by her family. They plan a memorial ceremony later. If you are so moved, consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association.
