Elmer W. Schmidt “Smitty”, 95, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2019, at Aurora Medical Center, Kenosha.

Born September 23, 1923, in Kenosha, he was the son of the late Henry and Pauline (Radel) Schmidt. He was educated in local schools graduating from Mary D. Bradford High School in 1941.
On April 27, 1946 he married Claire Francis Hart at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kenosha. She preceded him in death on January 26, 2007.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Navy as a machinist from November 1942 to January 1946, but remained in the Navy reserves Until October 22, 1952, receiving an Honorable Discharge.
Smitty was a machinist by trade and began his employment with Haubrich Bros. Manufacturing Co. as an apprentice; he continued his career as a tool and die maker at American Motors retiring February 1, 1985 after 26 years. After his retirement, Smitty, and Claire moved to Orlando, Florida where they resided until 2005.
He was a charter member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Kenosha where he served in various leadership roles as well as a member of the choir. While in Florida, he attended Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, serving as a volunteer with the Stephen Ministries and volunteering in various capacities. He was currently a member of St. Mary’s Lutheran Church, Kenosha, and was active in the Friendly Center.
Left to cherish his memory are his four children, Donald (Karyn) Schmidt of Elgin, IL, Barbara (Schmidt) Franklin, Kenosha, Nancy (Dan) Zick, Genoa City, WI, and John (Pat) Schmidt of Hartland, WI; 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grand-son.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Louise Schmidt, parents Henry and Pauline Schmidt, his wife, Claire Schmidt, great-grandson, Elijah Rowe, and his dear companion Betty Jean Bruno.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at the Proko Funeral Home 5111 60th Street, Kenosha, WI 53144. Full Military Honors will follow. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Interment will be held at Sunset Ridge at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Friendly Center at St. Mary’s Lutheran Church, 2001 80th St Kenosha, WI 53143, would be appreciated by the family.
