Obituary for Betty Johnson

Our beloved, Betty J. (Wright) Johnson, 80, departed this earthly realm and entered her eternal resting place on Saturday, November 7, 2020. Betty was born on December 7, 1939, in Detroit, MI, the third daughter to the late Lillie Mae (Kennedy) Wright and the late James Wright.

Betty received her education in the Detroit Public Schools then later moved to Kenosha, WI where she met and married the late Governor L. Johnson on May 27, 1958. To this union was born six children, Audrey Lovelace, April Johnson, Adrian Johnson, Desiree Lynn Johnson, Brent Adair Johnson, and Deetra Johnson.

From the early 1970s, Betty was employed at American Motors (Chrysler) in Kenosha, WI,as an Assembly Line Worker where she went on to retire in 1990. She also worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Seamstress.Betty was a Saved, Sanctified, and Holy Ghost filled woman who absolutely loved the Lord. She was very active in the church and worked tirelessly under the leadership of the late Bishop Jerry Baldwin Sr. and Bishop Jerry Baldwin Jr. of Bethlehem Temple in Kenosha, WI. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, on the Pastoral Aide Committee, the Usher Board and in the kitchen. In her later years, she served faithfully under the leadership of Bishop Leroy Shanks of Better Way Ministries in Racine, WI, where she was ordained a licensed Evangelist.

Betty was a loving and nurturing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.She had a heart for all and especially for family and always went above and beyond to make sure all those in her life wasn’t in need of anything. Betty lived and raised her children and grandchildren to reverence God’s word and respect His will. Her love for Jesus brought her children and grandchildren closer to Him. Betty was also an AMAZING cook! No one can make collard greens and dressing like Betty Johnson! She was very much known for getting in her car and traveling up and down the highways, visiting family in Detroit, and visiting churches throughout the Tri-State area. Her family nicknamed her “Betty Boom Boom in her Go Get’em Mobile” because she was always on the go. There are no words to adequately express just how much her presence, her laughter, and beautiful smile will be missed.

Betty leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Audrey Lovelace, April Johnson, Adrian (Sheryl) Johnson and Deetra Johnson; grandchildren, Crystle (Cory) Cooper, Willie LovelaceII, Domain Johnson, Darius Lovelace, Lerone Ivy, Brandon Johnson, Andre Johnson, Cornelius Jackson, Onnyx Hill and Arion Jones; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean (Charles) Hearns and Linda Waddell, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lillie Mae Wright; children, Desiree Lynn and Brent Adair; sister, Essie Mae Johnson; and husband Rev. Elder Governor Johnson.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 16, 2020, at Proko Funeral Home, 5111 60th Street, Kenosha, WI 53144 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will follow from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral service will be limited to 25 percent capacity, however the service will live-streamed via Facebook for those who wish to attend virtually. Interment will follow in Green Ridge Cemetery, 6604 7th Avenue, Kenosha, WI 53143. There will not be a repass.
